Book Review:
Thomas G. Krattenmaker, A Thinking Person’s Guide to the
Judicial Hall of Fame (reviewing G. Edward White’s The
American Judicial Tradition: Profiles of Leading American Judges
(1976)), 55 TEXAS L. REV. 749 (1976).
Abstract:
Professor Krattenmaker praises Professor White for seeking, in
less than 500 pages, to describe and analyze “the American
judicial tradition” as it has evolved since 1800. According to
Professor Krattenmaker, Professor White’s book, as a study of
the American judicial tradition, cannot compete with Llewellyn.
As a judicial biography, it replaces nothing. The book has,
however, the distinct advantage of bringing the main outlines of
much important biographical writing into compact perspective and
thus making the material available to those without years to
invest in the topic. It also provides a useful historical
perspective on an important aspect of appellate jurisprudence.
