Book Review:
Abraham J. Briloff, The Accounting Profession Behind the
Eight Ball (reviewing Mark Stevens’ The Big Eight),
61 TEXAS L. REV. 1357 (1983).
Abstract:
Stevens’ The Big Eight examines the character, conduct, and
clients of the eight national firms that dominated the
accounting profession at the time the book was written. Briloff
finds the book entertaining and engaging, but he suggests that
Stevens failed to balance his stories of the firms’ successes
and capabilities with tough questions about the firms’
difficulties and scandals. Briloff summarizes and critiques the
book chapter-by-chapter, concluding with his recommendations
about the appropriate role and behavior of accounting firms in
independent external audits.
