UT Law’s Students for the Arts cosponsors free legal clinic for local artists, March 31, 2011

Law Students for the Arts (LSfTA), a student group at the Law School, with support from Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA), will offer a free legal clinic for low-income artists on Thursday, March 31, 2011, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the offices of Fulbright & Jaworski LLP at 600 Congress Avenue, Suite 2400.

Volunteer attorneys will provide free legal advice on arts-related legal matters to low-income artists, musicians, and filmmakers.  Attendees will be seen by appointment and can expect to spend up to thirty minutes receiving advice from an attorney.

For an application or more information about participating in the clinic, email artslawclinic@gmail.com. Walk-ins will be accepted, space permitting.

Topics discussed may include copyright, trademark, contract, and any other legal issue related to the arts. Law students will assist artists in completing intake paperwork and clarifying the legal issue for which artists need advice. Cases not resolved at the clinic will be reviewed to see if further legal services can be provided at no charge.

“We hope to make the clinic an annual occurrence for our organization,” said Megan Dagerman, president of LSfTA. “It is very important to encourage the arts in a city as culturally diverse and artistically rich as Austin.  This is a great opportunity for UT Law students, attorneys, and artists to be able to interact and encourage artistic development in our community.”

This is the second clinic provided through the collaboration between LSfTA and TALA. LSfTA is a registered student organization at the Law School whose purpose is to bring like-minded students together to aid Austin-area artists, arts organizations, and pro-bono legal referral service groups.
