Background:

“Change it Up! Lawyering for Social Change” is an afternoon event organized by UT Law’s William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law and a group of second and third year law students. It features speakers, panel discussions, interactive breakout sessions and a reception for 1L and transfer students who are interested in social justice lawyering.

The event will include an introduction by Gary Bledsoe, president of the Texas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; a keynote address by Sarah Buel, clinical professor of law at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law; and two panels examining social change lawyering through the lens of immigration and school-to-prison pipeline issues.

Panelists include Deborah Fowler, deputy director of Texas Appleseed; Luis Figueroa, general counsel of the Office of Texas Senator Sylvia R. Garcia; Barbara Hines, clinical professor at UT Law; Stephanie Kolmar, staff attorney at American Gateways; Javier Maldonado, Law Office of Javier N. Maldonado, PC; Brian McGiverin, prisoners’ rights attorney for the Texas Civil Rights Project; and the Honorable John Vasquez, judge for the City of Austin Municipal Court. The program will be followed by a student happy hour.
