Second-year UT Law students Paige Armstrong-Gutierrez and Nora Gay have been awarded Baron & Budd Public Interest Scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year, each receiving $4,500 for committing to work 300 pro bono hours during the school year. The pro bono work will be with nonprofit organizations that provide legal services to underserved individuals or communities.

The scholarships were made possible by a gift from the Baron & Budd law firm, and are administered by the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law at The University of Texas School of Law.

The scholarships will support Armstrong-Gutierrez’s work at Texas Legal Services Center, where she will help provide limited-scope representation in family, employment, immigration and health law matters. Armstrong-Gutierrez is the scholarship chair of the Chicano/Hispanic Law Students Association and the events coordinator for the Public Interest Law Association.

Gay will work for the Texas Civil Rights Project on civil rights matters, including prisoner rights, police brutality, disability discrimination and free expression. Last summer she interned with the Washington Defender Association in Seattle, Wash., and is currently active in the American Constitution Society and Youth Court.
