Critically-acclaimed Shield discusses the implications of individuals making war on states
AUSTIN, Texas Professor Philip C. Bobbitt, who holds the A.W. Walker Centennial Chair in Law, will be a featured author at the Seventh Annual Texas Book Festival. The festival will showcase the critically-acclaimed The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace, and the Course of History (Knopf, 2002) on Saturday, November 16, at 3:30 p.m. in the Capitol Extension room E 2.014.
Bobbitt, a historian of nuclear strategy who has served in the White House, the Senate, and the National Security Council, will address the transformation of the nature of war and, with it, developing changes in statecraft as profound as history has yet seen. He argues that the resources of a state are no longer required to make war against another state, and then outlines the potential impact of such a shift.
The New York Times calls Shield, "magisterial in its scope and ambition." Paul Kennedy, writing in the New York Review of Books said, '"The Shield of Achilles may well become a classic to later generations." Michael Howard, Britain's leading military historian called it, "One of the most important books on international relations published in the last 50 years."
The Texas Book Festival will take place at the State Capitol in Austin on November 16-17, and benefits Texas public libraries. The Festival will also include a booksigning/sales tent, a book fair with 90-plus vendors, an extensive childrens activities area, a spoken-word tent, the Read-a-Latte Lounge for teens, and a live Texas music stage will be set up on the southwestern corner of the Capitol grounds. All events at the Capitol are free to the public.
The Festivals honorary chairman is First Lady Laura Bush, a former librarian and schoolteacher. Since its inception in 1996, the Festival has awarded more than $1.35 million in grants to 441 public libraries across Texas. More than 20,000 people attended the Festival in 2001.
