Event: SBA Hosts "Secrets of Success" Discussion with Local Attorneys, Nov. 19

AUSTIN, Texas The Student Bar Association at The University of Texas
School of Law is sponsoring a panel discussion with local, young attorneys entitled
"Secrets of Success" on Nov. 19 in the Eidman Courtroom. The panelists will
offer their insights about succeeding in the legal profession. All students
are invited to attend.
The following is a list of panelists:
- Judge Elizabeth Earle - City of Austin Community Court Judge, newly elected County Court-At-Law Judge in Travis Co., Austin Young Lawyer Association (AYLA) President and Texas Young Lawyer Association (TYLA) board member.
- Joe Brophy - Partner, Watson, Bishop, London, Galow and AYLA and TYLA board member.
- Todd Wong - Principal, Wong & Wong, and former AYLA President.
- Steve Foster - Gen. Counsel, Texas Senate Comm. on Criminal Justice, and AYLA and TYLA board member.
The Texas Young Lawyers Association will tape the event and distribute an edited version of the tape to all other law schools in Texas. Refreshments will be served following the discussion.
The following is a list of questions that the TYLA expects the panel to discuss:
- How can I get a job without a clerkship?
- Do I have to be in the top 10% to get a job?
- How important is networking in finding a job?
- Are there any particular classes I should take if I want to be a prosecutor, etc.?
- How do firms, etc. respond when a woman has a baby? (leave, part-time, etc.)
- What challenges (health insurance, etc.) do you face as a sole practitioner, and what are the benefits?
- Should I become active in TYLA or the local young lawyer association if I want to practice corporate law?
- Do you feel like you are busier now, or were you busier in law school?
- Did any of you have a career/job prior to going to law school, or did you go straight from college to law school?
- How does clerkship v. internship v. volunteer work look, compared to one another, when listing your summer activities on a resume?
