AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal (TIPLJ) at The University of Texas School of Law, in association with the UT Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS) and the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Texas, will host its annual symposium on February 28, 2003. The event is scheduled for the entire day, from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The event will be followed by a small reception.
Each year TIPLJ hosts the symposium to encourage submission of articles to the Journal and facilitate academic discussion among practicing attorneys interested in the latest topics of intellectual property. The symposium will be held over one day and will provide 6.25 hours of CLE credit with one of the hours qualifying as an ethics credit.
Topics for the 2003 Symposium will address recent developments in copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, technology transfers and patent law. The symposium will feature a question-and-answer session with the Honorable Sam Sparks of the U.S. District Court, Western District of Texas. The Symposium will also feature presentations by prominent members of the intellectual property law community.
Professor John Dzienkowski will give the keynote address entitled "Ethical Issues in Lawyer Equity Investments in Clients." He is a favorite professor at the law school and is the co-author of several books including Natural Resource Taxation: Principles and Policies, Professional Responsibility of Lawyers, and International Petroleum Transactions. He is the author of several articles in the area of legal ethics and is currently co-authoring a new edition of the treatise The Law of Lawyering. He is a member of the drafting committee which authors the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination.
The event is open to the public: students, faculty and attorneys. Priority seating will be given to paying attendees if seating becomes limited. Non-paying students are to provide their own lunch. We encourage potential attendees to check our website for the latest news surrounding our event, www.IPsymposium.com, especially for news regarding parking and hotel accommodations.
The symposium is funded entirely by generous contributions from local and national law firms, and individuals. We welcome any contributions to our annual symposium effort. All donations are tax deductible and are used exclusively for symposium materials and activities. Finally, the symposium offers sponsors an opportunity to introduce themselves to the many students at the Law School and in particular to those members of IPLS.
