AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas School of Law this week will celebrate the publication of Professor Philip Bobbitt's book The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace, and the Course of History with a new books colloquium. As part of the celebration, Anne-Marie Slaughter, Dean of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, will deliver the Sealy Lecture, "A New World Order," on Thursday, March 20, at 6:15 in the UT Law School's Kraft Eidman Courtroom. The public is invited to attend this event.
Slaughter's visit celebrates the publication of The Shield of Achilles. The book has been hailed as "magisterial in its scope and ambition" by the New York Times and was recently honored as one of the best books of 2002 by both The Economist and The Times (London).
In related news, the Library of Congress will hold a public reading and reception
for the 2002 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry winner on March
19, 2003 at 8 p.m. in Washington, D.C. Alice Fulton received the award for her
book, "Felt," published in 2001 by W.W. Norton. Established
in 1988 by Professor Philip Bobbitt, his father, and the Library of Congress,
this prize is the only national poetry award given by the United States.
Bobbitt is considered one of the nation's leading constitutional theorists.
His interests include not only constitutional law but also international security
and the history of strategy. He has published five additional books: Constitutional
Interpretation (1991), Democracy and Deterrence (1987), U.S.
Nuclear Strategy (with Freedman and Treverton) (1989), Constitutional
Fate (1982), Tragic Choices (with Calabresi) (1978).
Bobbitt is a member of the American Law Institute, The Council on Foreign Relations, the Pacific Council on International Policy, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He has served as Associate Counsel to the President, the Counselor on International Law at the State Department, Legal Counsel to the Senate Iran-Contra Committee, and Director for Intelligence, Senior Director for Critical Infrastructure and Senior Director for Strategic Planning at the National Security Council. He is a former trustee of Princeton University; and a former member of the Oxford University Modern History Faculty and the War Studies Department of Kings College, London.
