Will Head New University's International Law and International Human Rights Program
AUSTIN, Texas – Today the University of Texas School of Law announces that Professor Francesco Francioni, a long time visitor of the UT Law Faculty, has been elected to the Chair of International Law and International Human Rights at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy.
The EUI is an international, post-graduate university institution established by the European Union to train students from all European countries and other parts of the world for master and doctorate programs for periods ranging from 1 to 4 years. Francioni will be responsible for promoting research and for teaching in the area of international law, European law, and human rights. He will be also responsible for the organization, as co-director, of the Academy of European Law and Human Rights, offering advanced courses in these two subjects to post-graduate students and scholars from all over the world.
"Francesco's scholarship, teaching skills, and affability position him well for success in his new position. We wish him well in his new work, just as we look forward to his returning to UT next year to help our students learn about the changes going on in this important field from his European vantage point," said Dean Bill Powers.
Francioni recently served as the professor of International Law at the University of Siena (Italy), where he directed Siena's International Peace Studies Center. He teaches public international law and international human rights at Texas each year. A member of the American Law Institute, he has been a visiting professor at the European University Institute (Florence), Cornell, Toronto, and Cambridge. He is author, co-author or editor of nine books, including International Responsibility for Environmental Harm (1991) and Italy and EC Membership Evaluated (1992).
