Awards totaling $50,000 given for demonstrated commitment to public service
AUSTIN, Texas Ten students at the University of Texas School of Law have been selected by Dean William Powers to receive this year's UT Co-Op Public Interest Awards, totaling $50,000, in honor of the students' demonstrated commitment to public service. The recipients will be honored as part of the University Co-Op George H. Mitchell Student Awards for Academic Excellence banquet on April 6 at the Four Seasons Hotel.
The law students are Layla Aflatooni, Andrea Beleno, Luis Figueroa, Shavondalyn Givens, Eliza Hirst, Christina Mann, Marilee Manning, Katherine Saunders, Erica Schommer, and Shannon Lee Snead. Eden Harrington, the Director of the Center for Public Interest Law at UT Law, coordinated the selection of these students. All ten will graduate on May 17.
Dean Bill Powers joins me in congratulating and commending these students for their dedication to ensuring equal access to justice for all. The Law School community is proud to join the Co-Op in recognizing their achievements, Harrington said.
Dean Powers will present the awards to the students, along with George Mitchell, President of the Co-Op, Dr. Larry Faulkner, President of UT-Austin, and Dr. Sheldon Ekland-Olsen, Executive Vice-President and Provost. Funding for the awards including two awards of $9,000 and eight awards of $4,000 was provided by the UT Co-Op.
