Events: SBA Hosts Law Week, Feb. 20 – Feb. 25

Events include Public Service Day, Student-Faculty Dodgeball, Casino Night

AUSTIN, Texas—The Student Bar Association (SBA) at The University of Texas School of Law is sponsoring W. Page Keeton Law Week. Law Week is a series of events, which are included in the calendar below, that celebrate the students, faculty, and alumni of UT Law.

Law Week features SBA’s flagship Casino Night semi-formal event, along with a number of activities at the Law School designed to promote community and student-faculty interaction. This year’s calendar features a student-faculty dodgeball game, a community breakfast and lunch, SBA Public Service Day, a "Townes Hall" meeting with the Dean, a free Happy Hour for 3Ls and many more activities.

SBA Member, Ty Cobb said, “Law Week is a celebration of everything that makes the UT Law experience so unique. The week is about bringing together the entire law school to celebrate our fortune, give back to our community, and recognize those that have impacted us."

Monday, February 20

SBA Breakfast Taco Kickoff
8:00 AM, Susman Godfrey Atrium
Start W. Page Keeton Law Week 2006 off right with FREE breakfast tacos!

SBA Student Organization Fair
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Susman Godfrey Atrium
Come learn about the law school’s many student organizations and find out how you can get involved! The SBA will also be distributing Law Week programs and a limited number of FREE Law Week t-shirts; come by early to pick one up.

CHLSA: Fajita Fiesta
11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Susman Godfrey Atrium
A tradition since the early 1980's, CHLSA has sold fajita tacos and provided music and entertainment for students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors. This year’s 'fiesta' is dedicated to Susana Aleman, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.

Tuesday, February 21

SBA Public Service Day, benefiting The Center for Child Protection
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Susman Godfrey Atrium
The SBA will be collecting items for donation to the Center for Child Protection’s Project Graduation. A list of items accepted for donation is available at Donate an item and receive a FREE scoop of Amy’s ice cream.

SBA Townes Hall Meeting with Dean Steven Goode
3:30 PM – 4:30 PM, Townes Hall Room 2.139
Discuss current issues affecting the law school and ask questions about the future of the law school with Dean Goode. Refreshments will be provided.

Phi Alpha Delta: Initiation and Happy Hour
5:00 PM, Townes Hall Room 2.140
Reception immediately following at Cuba Libre, 409 Colorado Street
Law Fraternity Phi Alpha Delta will hold its initiation ceremony followed by a happy hour at Cuba Libre. A small bar tab will be available for all UT Law students. Come by and socialize with other Phi Alpha Delta members and learn more about becoming a member!

American Constitution Society: Sabine Romero
5:15 PM, Connally Center for Justice, Eidman Jury Room
Join ACS for their general meeting. This week’s meeting will include a guest lecture from Sabine Romero, a progressive lawyer in Austin.

Wednesday, February 22

SBA Dean’s Luncheon
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Susman Godfrey Atrium
The Dean’s Luncheon is an annual tradition. This year’s luncheon will honor Law Week Faculty Honoree Professor Jordan Steiker and Staff/Administrator Honoree Rey Ramos, Director of Admissions. During the luncheon the Student Bar Association will also recognize the sponsors who have made Law Week possible. All UT Law students, faculty, and staff are welcome; lunch is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This luncheon is sponsored in part by the University Co-op and the Office of the Dean.

Law Mentors: Law Flicks
10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Tom Clark Lounge
Sit back, relax, skip class, and enjoy free popcorn while watching movies. Law-related films will be shown continuously throughout the day. The Law Mentors serve as the community, social, and athletic coordinators for 1L mentor groups and are part of The Society Program.

Environmental Law Society: Tasty Treats Bake Sale

ELS members will bake tasty treats for your enjoyment. Our finest quality home-baked good will include organic and locally sourced ingredients. Proceeds will benefit ELS.

Texas International Law Journal: International Trivia Game

OUTLaw: Lunch with Lambda Legal
12:30 PM, Townes Hall Room 3.142
OUTLaw is proud to host a presentation by Lambda Legal on the work that the organization does and an overview of current groundbreaking litigation pending in the courts. Present will be Dennis Coleman, South Central Regional Director, and Ken Upton, Senior Staff Attorney, for Lambda Legal. Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. SBA “Mad Dog” Dawson Faculty-Student Dodgeball Tournament

Now in its second year, the “Mad Dog” Dawson Faculty-Student Dodgeball Tournament will bring together faculty and students as they play the fiercest game on the playground: dodgeball. Refreshments provided by BAR BRI and SBA.

The Review of Litigation: THE REVIEW at 25: Looking to the Future of Litigation

National Lawyers’ Guild: Law and Social Change Discussion Series

As part of their semester-long, bi-weekly discussion series, Professor Julius Getman will host a discussion entitled, "The Fall and Possible Rise of the American Labor Movement.”

Human Rights Law Society: “UN Peacekeepers” film screening

The Human Rights Law Society, along with the UT chapter of Americans for Informed Democracy, is proud to show “The Peacekeepers,” a powerful documentary about the United Nations Peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A panel discussion will follow, and refreshments will be served.

SBA “Bar Review”

Come out to the SBA’s weekly “Bar Review” and mingle with fellow law students as we gear up for Casino Night on Saturday, February 25!

Samsara Yoga Club: Weekend Kickoff

Join Samsara Yoga Club for free food and drink and a presentation at 3:45 PM by Ellen Briggs about how to get the most out of your yoga classes. Free acupuncture mini-treatments will also be available, courtesy of Medical Arts Acupuncture.

Texas Law Fellowships: Excellence in Public Interest Awards Reception
6:30 PM, Bill and Stephanie Whitehurst's home (2703 Westlake Drive).
The annual Excellence in Public Interest Awards reception honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions in the public interest law field. This year, the Texas Law Fellowships are awarding Hadley McIntosh for her public interest commitment as a law student, Professors Wagner and Blais for their contributions as law school faculty, F. Scott McCown for his work as a public interest attorney, and Alamdar Hamdani and Paul Ruiz for their contributions as private attorneys. Many representatives of public interest organizations in Austin are expected to attend. The event is open to all law students and to guests of the honorees.

Bracewell & Giuliani's 3L Sunflower Society Happy Hour
4:30 PM – 6:30 PM, Iron Cactus, 606 Trinity Street
What is the Sunflower Society? Why have over 500 3Ls joined the Sunflower Society over the past 3 years? Learn the answer to these questions and enjoy FREE drinks on the Iron Cactus balcony. The Sunflower Society consists of graduating students that pledge to support The University of Texas School of Law over a three-year period following graduation. Members are given a brick with their name on it in the law school breezeway and are invited to an annual donor event hosted by the Dean.

Saturday, February 25

People’s Law School
8:30 AM – 1:30 PM, University of Texas School of Law
Now in its 12th year, People's Law School is sponsored by the Austin Bar Association, The Lawyer Referral Service, KEYE and The University of Texas School of Law. Attorneys from the community teach classes about basic legal rights in areas of law where people commonly have questions. Topics will include family law, entertainment law, personal bankruptcy, small business law, employment law, and wills and estate law. The event is free and open to the public.

10:00 PM – 2:00 AM, Hyatt on Town Lake
An annual tradition at The Law School, Casino Night is a much-anticipated event. Dress in your best and head to the Hyatt for an evening of gambling and entertainment provided by cover band The Spazmatics. Tickets are available for $30 in advance starting Monday, February 20 in the Susman Godfrey Atrium. Note: ticket prices increase to $35 all day on Friday, February 25.
