Grand Opening of George’s Café, Named in Honor of Texas Trial Attorney George Fleming, '71, Nov. 17

AUSTIN, Texas—The grand opening of George’s Café will be celebrated Friday (Nov. 17) at The University of Texas School of Law, following a complete renovation of the Law School’s dining commons over the last several months.

The renovation was funded as part of a $1,250,000 gift from Texas trial attorney and UT Law alumnus George Fleming and was named "George's Café" in his honor.

The balance of the gift will be used to broaden programs and services in the Law School's Career Services Office and to establish the George M. Fleming Faculty Excellence Fund to recruit and retain outstanding faculty. The gift comes from the Fleming Endowment, established in 1997 by Fleming, who earned his B.A. in 1968 and J.D. in 1971 from UT.

Fleming is a highly successful trial attorney who founded the Houston-based law firm of Fleming & Associates in 1981 and earned a national reputation representing plaintiffs in mass tort and consumer litigation cases.

"We are very, very grateful to George Fleming for his thoughtful and generous support," said UT Law Dean Larry Sager. “The Café is a wonderful addition to the community. And with it comes the resources to excel still further in career counseling and faculty recruitment. George has seen to the welfare of our students at every turn. He is a great friend of the Law School.”

On Friday (Nov. 17), Fleming, Sager, and others will serve free hot dogs and sodas to law students in celebration of the opening of George’s Café. On other days, George's Café offers an eclectic menu, from early in the morning to evening, provided by Texas Coffee Traders, which also operates the coffee bar in the Susman Godfrey Atrium.

The Austin-based architecture firm of Susman Tisdale Gayle (STG) designed George's Café.

"I am very grateful for the education I received at UT Law School. I hope that this gift will make a positive difference in one form or another to every student who enters Townes Hall," Fleming said. "In particular, I am excited about George’s Café. It's now a place where students will gather, relax, talk, and study—a place that will be important in their memories of the Law School."

Fleming & Associates comprises 13 attorneys and 75 support staff and contract personnel. The firm's expertise includes multi-plaintiff litigation in areas such as personal injury, aviation accidents, property damage, consumer protection, securities fraud, insurance fraud, oil and gas issues, products liability, and toxic tort cases.
