Justices of Texas 1836–1986: Online resource spotlights the
Texas judiciary
The Tarlton Law Library brings 150 years of the Texas judiciary to life with a new
online resource for students, scholars, or anyone with an interest in Texas legal
history. Justices of Texas 1836–1986 includes detailed
information on the 160 people who served on the Texas Supreme Court and Court of
Criminal Appeals during that period, making it easier than ever before to delve
into the fascinating lives and fateful decisions that shaped two centuries of Texas
history.
The resource features a simple interface that allows users to search in
chronological or alphabetical order, or by typing in keywords and names. The
justices’ entries include biographies, photographs, research sources, and
links to further information.
In addition to the searchable database, a detailed timeline of the Texas Supreme
Court and Court of Criminal Appeals depicts milestones in the history of these
organizations, from the establishment of the Texas Supreme Court in 1836 to the
renaming and restructuring of the Courts of Civil Appeals into the modern Courts of
Appeals in 1980.
