Professor Sanford Levinson Featured on Bill Moyers Journal

Professor Sanford Levinson

Professor Sanford Levinson of The University of Texas School of Law discusses his latest book and rewriting the U.S. Constitution with Bill Moyers, considered one of the most influential journalists of our time, on a weekly public affairs show airing Friday, Dec. 21, on PBS.

The interview on Bill Moyers Journal can be viewed at 8 p.m. CST on KLRU-TV, the Austin PBS station, and again on December 26. For further information, please check the show’s website at http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/about/airdates.html

Moyers interviewed Levinson Wednesday in New York for a segment on the hour-long show that features produced analysis of vital issues, strong interviews with unique voices on politics, the arts and letters, science, religion, and the media, as well as debates on public issues and documentary specials.

Levinson is a well-known legal scholar and the author of four books, most recently, Our Undemocratic Constitution: Where the Constitution Goes Wrong (And How We the People can Correct It). Levinson, who holds the W. St. John Garwood and W. St. John Garwood, Jr. Centennial Chair in Law, joined UT Law in 1980. Previously a member of the Department of Politics at Princeton University, he is also a professor in the Department of Government at UT. This fall, he taught at Harvard University as a visiting professor.

In his latest book, Levinson argues that too many of its provisions promote either unjust or ineffective government. Under the existing blueprint, we can neither rid ourselves of incompetent presidents nor assure continuity of government following catastrophic attacks. Also problematic is the appointment of Supreme Court judges for life. Adding insult to injury, the U.S. Constitution is the most difficult to amend or update of any constitution currently existing in the world today.

Levinson has a site devoted to Our Undemocratic Constitution where he invites viewers of the Bill Moyers Journal to weigh in on the issues that he and Moyers discuss regarding the wisdom of assessing the Constitution against 21st century values and realities.
