S. Jacob Scherr, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s International Program, will deliver a presentation entitled “The 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Summit-Historic, Transformative, and Hopeful.” on Friday, February 5, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. in Townes hall 3.125 at the University of Texas School of Law. The presentation is sponsored by the Center for Global Energy, International Arbitration, and Environmental Law; the Environmental Science Institute; and the Environmental Law Society. Scherr’s talk will be followed by a question and answer session. Boxed lunches will be served. Space is limited so plan to arrive early.
Scherr is a senior attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in its Washington, D.C., office, and initiated NRDC’s work on climate change in 1989. He founded Earth Summit Watch in 1992 to monitor national implementation of commitments to sustainable development. In 2006, he was the lead author of a well-received article in the Georgetown International Environmental Law Review that examined the concept of partnerships among governments, companies, and citizen groups as a key means of action on sustainable development. In 2009, Scherr organized an NRDC delegation to the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit. For several years, Scherr oversaw the development of NRDC’s efforts in China. Last year, he directed a feasibility study for a NRDC program in India. He is now a leader of an NRDC team that has launched an initiative to work on climate change and energy issues in India.
