What is Texas Law Fellowships?Texas Law Fellowships, or TLF, is a 503(c)(3) non-profit corporation that sponsors public interest fellowships for students at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. Every year since 1986, TLF has raised money from the UT Law and Texas Legal Community to fund fellowships for UT Law students who work in public interest internships during the summer, and would normally not receive remuneration for their valuable work. The fellowships are awarded based on a vote from all of the Texas Law Fellowships members, who donate a minimum of $25 dollars in order to vote for six fellowship applicants. The top vote getters receive a $4000 grant to work 400 hours at a public interest internship over the summer. Our Mission StatementThe TLF Mission statement proclaims that no legal education is complete unless it instills in students an obligation to contribute to the public good in exchange for the privilege of practicing law. We strive to create an environment at the University of Texas School of Law in which students can fully, effectively and easily serve the public interest. This mandate has produced two distinct goals: 1. The promotion of public interest through fundraising and providing fellowships to students who work in a public interest internship and would otherwise not receive adequate financial compensation. 2. Working in conjunction with other public interest law groups both within the law school community as well as in the legal community at large to draw attention to public interest law issues and recognize the importance of public interest law to society. Our first goal is fulfilled through the various fundraising events that we organize every year. These include the Fall Auction and the Spring Pledge Drive. TLF also receives funding from private benefactors who participate in our pledge matching and underwriting programs. TLF SuccessSince 1988, Texas Law Fellowships has gone from funding seven fellows to funding twenty-three in 2007. TLF also raised over $79,000 in 2007, making the year an amazing success.
