Events
Community
TMLS holds a variety of events that
are meant to create a strong community within the organization.
From the general meetings, which are held on the first and third Tuesday of the
month, to the social happy hour at Dave & Buster's which brings the
community together to welcome the incoming 1Ls, TMLS seeks to create
a meaningful organization for all of its members. Additional
community events include an annual boat cruise and end of year
banquet to celebrate accomplishments and a successful year.
Social events aren't the only way TMLS
seeks to build a close-knit organization. Diversity
Education Weekend brings various minority organizations together for
lectures, panels, and a reception. The spring
symposium brings various minority organizations together for
lectures, panels, and a reception.

Social Action Trip
TMLS prides itself in advocating and
giving back to the Austin community. Every Friday at the Austin Learning
Center (ALC), TMLS members mentor middle school and high school-aged
at-risk teenagers who have been removed from their home schools for
breaking rules, disorderly conduct, etc. TMLS members engage in a
variety of community service activities. Examples include
volunteer activities at Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.
This year, TMLS will implement two new
service programs. The Social Action trip will allow members to
travel to an at-risk community outside of the United States to
volunteer legal services. The RUN program seeks to equip
minority communities in Texas schools with information and hands on
experience that will both motivate them to apply to Texas law
schools and increase the chances of them gaining entrance.
Professional
TMLS also seeks to provide
professional networking and skill building opportunities for its
members. Every year, TMLS partners with the Austin
Black Lawyers’ Association to host a picnic for the members of both
organizations where members can meet over food and games. TMLS provides mentoring
opportunities to TMLS members by partnering them with either Austin Black
Lawyers’ Association attorneys of Fulbright & Jaworski attorneys.
TMLS members use their skills to
compete in regional and national mock trial and moot court
competitions. The organization sends their members to both the
National Black Law Student Association's Annual Convention and
the Rocky Mountain Regional Black Law Student Association's Annual
Convention to
represent TMLS at the annual conference and sends teams to compete.
To help its members with be
successful, TMLS also focuses on skill building within the
organization. Often in
conjunction with other law school organizations and law firms, TMLS offers a workshop to help members build up their interviewing
skills; helps its members
find summer employment by organizing a mass mailing of resumes to
the potential employers identified by the specific member; and offers a workshop to help members build up their resume drafting
skills.
