The Thurgood Marshall Legal Society (TMLS), named after the distinguished Supreme Court Justice and pioneer of civil rights, was established in 1970 to address the concerns of African-American students at the University of Texas School of Law. TMLS serves as the University of Texas School of Law’s chapter of the National Black Law Students Association.
TMLS strives to increase the number of African-American students at UT Law by participating in recruiting programs and reaching out to high school and college students. TMLS is also committed to helping incoming African-American law students transition to law school by offering moving and housing information, sponsoring 1L academic workshops, and providing upper-class mentors. Throughout the school year, TMLS remains committed to encouraging the professional success of its members. One of our goals is to assist members in securing employment and to facilitate interaction between TMLS members and the surrounding legal community. We advance these goals by inviting speakers to our bi-weekly meetings, presenting workshops on topics such as resume writing, and conducting minority career panels. TMLS members also strive to increase diversity in the student body, as well as among faculty and staff. We are committed to promoting cultural awareness among the student body and to fostering positive relationships with other organizations within the law school, in the greater university, and in the community. We realize that it is our responsibility not only to help each other as law students, but to also contribute to others in our community. Throughout the year, TMLS participates in community service activities ranging from Black History programs at local high schools to collecting gifts for abused children. In addition to supporting the academic and professional endeavors of our members, we also provide a social network where students can interact outside of the classroom. Throughout the school year, TMLS sponsors several events where members can socialize with each other, and other student and community organizations. All are welcome. Join us!
