Legal Writing.  All students take the required year-long sequence called Legal Research and Legal Writing.  In the fall, the course introduces students to the basics of legal research and to the traditional legal memorandum.  In the spring, the course focuses in brief writing and oral advocacy.

During the second and third years, including the summer term, students can choose from a variety of courses:

• Legal Writing, Advanced: General


• Legal Writing, Advanced: Litigation


• Legal Writing, Advanced: Transactional Drafting

In addition to the course offerings, the Law School offers students assistance in developing their writing skills through the Law School Writing Center.

Research.  In the first year legal research and writing course, students are introduced to legal research resources and strategies.  To further develop those research skills and to gain a greater understanding of the sources and use of legal authorities, students may choose among a number of legal research electives.

In addition, there are a number of one-hour pass/fail electives in advanced legal research.  Students may choose among classes that cover legal research in specific subjects (including intellectual property and tax) and those that focus on particular jurisdictions (Texas and foreign and international law).  A one hour pass/fail course in general legal research is also offered to second and third year students.
