This course is restricted to upper division students only.
This course will explore a wide range of recent scholarship on legal history. The professor will select the reading for the first class. The remaining readings will be chosen in consultation with the students, who will each have to recommend one book by the first meeting. For each class students will have to write a 500-word review of the assigned reading. The final paper will be a 2000-word review of a book (selected by the student) that we did not read for the class. At the beginning of the semester, there will be some instruction on the technique of writing book reviews. Students can recommend books on any aspect of legal history--ancient, medieval, modern, Western, non-Western--with the exception of American constitutional law or of books that are primarily about political history. The class will not meet every week in order to provide time to complete the readings.
