Commissioner Apfel's Speech on Social Security Transformation U.S. Social Security Commissioner Kenneth S. Apfel, who will join the LBJ School faculty in January 2001, gave an insightful description of how government manages change when he spoke at the annual conference of the National Academy of Public Administration in November. Speaking specifically of the transformation that took place in the Social Security Administration during his three years in office, Apfel described the challenges of leading one of the federal government's largest and most visible organizations. The speech illustrates the depth of experience Apfel will bring to the LBJ School, and also underscores of some of the issues and themes he will explore while teaching here. December 12, 2000 |
