Fostering Diversity in Public Policy Conference to be Held at LBJ School

A conference titled "Fostering Diversity in Public Policy" will be hosted by the Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellows and the Public Affairs Alliance for Communities of Color (PAACC) on Friday, November 17 at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin.

The one-day conference will engage PPIA alumni and fellows, LBJ School alumni, policy professionals, and students in dialogue concerning policy issues relevant to communities of color. Panel sessions will address economic development, education, immigration, health care, environmental racism, community-based change, and advocacy. In addition, the conference will serve as the first building block in creating an association for public policy professionals of color..

Gary Bledsoe, President of the Texas NAACP, will give a keynote address, and University of Texas President Larry Faulkner will give a morning welcome. Speakers and panelists include the following public policy practitioners:

  • State Representative Ruth Jones McClendon
  • Amy Mok Wong, Board of Directors President of the Asian American Alliance
  • Susana Almanza, Executive Director of People Organized in Defense of Earth and her Resources
  • Ray Ocañas, Executive Director of the Texas Association of Community Development Corporations
  • Augustine Garza, Deputy Director of Admissions, The University of Texas at Austin
  • Angela Valenzuela, Associate Professor at the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Center for Mexican American Studies, The University of Texas at Austin
  • Kevin Collins, Director of Office of Minority Health, Texas Department of Health
  • Marty Darnell, Program Specialist at the Office of Minority Health, Texas Department of Health
  • Carol Hallstrom, Community Relations Officer, United States Immigration and Naturalization Service
  • Alma Maquitico, Assistant Coordinator, Immigration Law Enforcement Monitoring Project
  • Nidia Salamanca, Board Member of the Texas Immigrant and Refugee Coalition and Executive Director of the Political Assylum Project of Austin
  • Francisco Guajardo, Executive Director of the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development
  • Miguel Guajardo, Policy Reform Initiative Director of the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development
  • Laura Rodriguez, Editor at the Llano Grande Publications, Llano Grande Center for Research and Development
  • Felicia Escobar, Policy Associate, National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Texas Office
  • Ardina Rodriguez, President of the American Indian Resource and Education Coalition

The opening session will take place at 9 a.m. in Bass Lecture Hall, located in the basement of the LBJ School in Sid Richardson Hall, Unit 3, on the corner of Red River and Dean Keeton.
