Holidays Inspire Giving at LBJ School The holidays are fast approaching and the LBJ School is upholding its own tradition of charitable giving within the local community. Faculty, students and staff have been asked to donate money and gifts to two local programs designed for families with special needs this holiday season. Second-year student Steven Schauer is leading an effort within the LBJ School to sponsor underprivileged families through the Christmas Bureau, a local agency that provides lower income families with children's toys and the trimmings for a Christmas dinner. Schauer has simplified the process by personally handling the logistics and paperwork, and only asking volunteers to make $10 donations. After collecting the money, he will purchase a gift card for groceries at HEB and use the remainder for new toys. Only minutes after issuing the e-mail announcing his drive, Schauer realized that the LBJ School would be able to adopt at least two families due to a high number of pledges. To make a cash or check donation, contact Schauer at stevenschauer@hotmail.com. The Christmas Bureau, which is located at Northcross Mall, also has a need for volunteers who can answer phones, process applications, provide clerical assistance, prepare food baskets, and wrap gifts. For further information about volunteer opportunities, call the Bureau at 453-3950. For those who want to personally select holiday gifts, the Dean's Office is serving as a "donation station" for the University-wide Orange Santa program. Orange Santa provides a "gift store" for University families with special needs. Donors are asked to bring new, unwrapped gifts to the front desk of the Dean's Office before December 12.
