Seminar Gives Communications Tips for Legislative Session

What communication strategy works best when presenting information to legislators, the press, consumers, taxpayers, board members, and the public in general? How should message points be developed? How can expectations be understood and met?

These and other questions were on the minds of public sector managers and executives who attended a one-day seminar sponsored by the LBJ School's Office of Conferences and Training and Strategic Partnerships, Inc.

Designed to strengthen the legislative and media communications skills of public affairs professionals, the seminar was geared toward individuals who may be called upon to make their organization's case in the next legislative session. The seminar took place at the J.J. Pickle Research Center in Austin, Texas on September 21.

In a four-part discussion series, panelists discussed the in's and out's of making presentations to legislators; the do's and don'ts of dealing with the media; reacting positively when planning goes awry; and meeting the expectations of the Legislature.
