Governor Owens receives 2000 Distinguished Public Service Award Colorado Governor Bill Owens (LBJ Class of 1975) has been selected by the LBJ Alumni Association as the recipient of its 2000 Distinguished Public Service Award. The association made the announcement on August 16, and the presentation will be made during an annual reception for alumni that will take place on August 25 in the Great Hall of the LBJ Library and Museum. A native of Texas, Owens is Colorado's first Republican governor in 24 years and also the first LBJ School alumnus to serve as a state governor. Before he was elected in 1998, Owens served as state treasurer and as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives and Senate. As a legislator, Owens sponsored successful legislation in the areas of welfare reform, child abuse, education, legal reform, and criminal justice. Owens also has extensive private sector experience, including serving as executive director for a Colorado trade association and as a management consultant for a Washington, D.C., accounting firm. As governor, Owens has worked to promote economic development, increase funding in education, cut taxes and limit state spending. The LBJ School Alumni Association presents the Distinguished Public Service Award annually to recognize alumni who are considered by their peers to have significantly contributed to public policy, excelled in their chosen field, shown dedication to community service and volunteerism, and demonstrated commitment to the LBJ School and its mission. Last spring, Owens received the UT Austin Graduate School's Outstanding Alumnus Award. As part of the award, a $5,000 fellowship has been set up by the university in Owen's name.
