EC Fellow to Focus on Information Society and the New Economy Alain Stekke, the 2000 European Commission Fellow, arrived at the LBJ School on August 21. Stekke is Principal Administrator in the Directorate-General of the European Commission's Information Society, a post he has held since 1985. In this capacity he works in economic analysis, particularly in relation to the economics of the telecommunications regulatory framework in Europe. Stekke's primary interests involve the effects of the information society and the internet economy on social innovations. He contends that he is not a "techie" and is more intrigued by the social, legal and regulatory movements spurred by the technological revolution than by the mechanics of the technology. Stekke will teach a seminar this fall on European integration. He plans to keep the course matter open initially so that it may be tailored to the interests of the students. He is particularly interested in United States &endash; European Union relations in the context of globalization and the post cold war era. He also hopes to foster a collaborative exchange between LBJ students and students at the College of Europe in Brugge, Belgium, where he is a professor. August 22, 2000 |
