Freedom from Oil: panel presentation for UT community

On Monday, October 22, 2007 the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy hosted a panel discussion featuring David Sandalow, Senior Fellow of Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution and author of Freedom From Oil: How the Next President Can End the United States' Oil Addiction. Sandalow was joined by:

The panel took place in the AVAYA Auditorium in the ACES building and over 100 members across the UT and Austin communities were present. Discussion topics included oil dependence, global warming, and the geopolitical impact of current and proposed energy policies. There was a question and answer session and Mr. Sandalow signed books after the event.

The Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy is the University's first center dedicated to energy and environmental policy, CIEEP seeks to inform the policy-making process with the best scientific and engineering expertise. Chartered in 2005, it joins the capabilities of the University's Jackson School of Geosciences and the Cockrell School of Engineering with the LBJ School of Public Affairs.

About David B. Sandalow

David B. Sandalow is Energy & Environment Scholar and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. He is the author of Freedom from Oil (McGraw-Hill, October 2007). Mr. Sandalow is Chair of the Energy & Climate Working Group of the Clinton Global Initiative.

Mr. Sandalow has served as Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment & Science; Senior Director for Environmental Affairs, National Security Council; Associate Director for the Global Environment, White House Council on Environmental Quality; and Executive Vice President, World Wildlife Fund-US. His opinion pieces and articles have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, Financial Times, International Herald Tribune, Boston Globe, Science and many other periodicals.

Mr. Sandalow has been a Stimson Fellow at Yale University; commencement speaker at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resource & the Environment; member of the Sustainable Development Roundtable at the OECD; member of the American Bar Association (ABA) Standing Committee on Environmental Law; and co-chair of the ABA's Annual Conference on Environmental Law. He is a member of the board of First Voice International and member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Sandalow is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School (JD) and Yale College (BA Philosophy).
