Howard Prince honored by West Point alumni association

Howard Prince, director of the LBJ School’s Center for Ethical Leadership, is among the recipients of the Distinguished Graduate Award presented by the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy (USMA). Prince, who has led the Center for Ethical Leadership since June 2001, is internationally recognized as a pioneer and visionary in the field of leadership development. Last fall, he was named clinical professor and holder of the Loyd Hackler Endowed Chair in Ethical Leadership at the LBJ School.

According to the USMA Association of Graduates’ web site, the Distinguished Graduate Award is given to USMA graduates “whose character, distinguished service, and stature draw wholesome comparison to the qualities that West Point strives for in keeping with its motto: ‘Duty, Honor, Country.’ ” In addition to Prince, six other USMA graduates were named to receive this year’s award.

Prince joins a group of distinguished Americans who have received the Distinguished Graduate Award since it was established in 1992. They include General Alexander M. Haig, Jr., General Norman Schwarzkopf and General William C. Westmoreland; NASA astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Frank Borman; former U.S. National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft; and General Howard D. Graves, who laid the groundwork for the Center for Ethical Leadership in 1998.

A 1962 honor graduate of West Point, Prince holds a master of arts degree in international relations from American University and a Ph.D. in psychology from UT Austin.

Prince served more than 28 years in the U.S. Army and was promoted to brigadier general upon his retirement in 1990, when he was presented with the army's highest award for service, the Distinguished Service Medal.
