Ethics in Texas State Government
A conference entitled "Ethics in Government: Earning the Public Trust" will be held January 4-5 at the LBJ School. Cosponsored by the Texas Ethics Commission, the State Comptroller's Office, and the Texas Department of Human Services, the program will present workshops on such topics as the role of the state agency ethics advisor, the applications of the Open Meetings and Open Records acts, and the current status of ethics policy and enforcement in Texas state government. Among the scheduled speakers and panelists are Michael Josephson of California's Josephson Institute, Jolie Hazlewood of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle, Tom Harrison, Executive Director of the Texas Ethics Commission, and LBJ School Professor Barbara Jordan. The conference is directed toward state agency heads, ethics advisors, and human resource managers. Representatives from local government entities are also invited to attend. Information Systems Policy
The LBJ School's 21st Century Project is hosting a workshop series on information policy controversies that public officials will face when they take their agencies online. The 12-part series, which began November 17 and will continue until May 3, will address such topics as privacy, public online systems, security, intellectual property, and the future of the Internet and digital telecommunications. Among the faculty for the program are Gary Chapman, Coordinator of the 21st Century Project; Gene Crick, President of the Metropolitan Austin Interactive Network (MAIN); Sue Beckwith, Executive Director of Austin Free-Net; Paul Smolen (LBJ Class of '77), Manager of Cable and Regulatory Affairs for the City of Austin; David Smith, President of the Austin Electronic Frontier Foundation; Becky Gadell, Director of Austin City Connection, the City of Austin's World Wide Web site; and Peter H. Lewis, cyberspace correspondent for the New York Times.

Tom Slick Conference on World Peace
An international conference on sustainable development and the peace process will be held March 28-29 at the LBJ School under the auspices of the Distinguished Visiting Tom Slick Professorship of World Peace. The program, which will bring together experts from around the world, is being coordinated by Antônio Magalhães, the 1995-96 Tom Slick Professor.
