Trade seminar looks at effects of international pacts

A November seminar held at the LBJ School discussed how international trade agreements may conflict with federal legislation and how these provisions affect state and provincial laws.

The discussion focused on the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and how these agreements bind the states and provinces in the same way they bind the federal government.

The one-day conference brought together state and provincial policymakers, educators, and private interests from Canada, Mexico, and the United States to discuss common concerns.

The conference was sponsored by the LBJ School's U.S.-Mexican Policy Studies Program and Office of Conferences and Training, the National Conference of State Legislatures, the Texas Attorney General's Office, and the Western Governors' Association.
