Brazilian economist is Tom Slick Professor

Antônio R. Magalhães, a Brazilian economist with a background in regional economics and development planning, is the 1995-96 Distinguished Visiting Tom Slick Professor of World Peace at the LBJ School.

Professor Magalhães, who has a doctorate from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, has served as Brazil's Vice-Minister of Planning and as Secretary of Planning in the State of Ceará. In 1991, he was awarded the Mitchell Prize for Sustainable Development, and he has written or edited several books and articles on development planning, the environment, and sustainable development.

Along with LBJ School Professor Jurgen Schmandt, Professor Magalhães is directing a policy research project entitled "The Road to Sustainable Development." In this project, team members are identifying and analyzing sustainable development projects in different countries and producing strategies for implementing viable policies in key areas such as water management, agriculture, and education.

Professor Magalhães is also involved with organizing the Tom Slick Conference on World Peace, to be held at the LBJ School in the spring of 1996. The conference will focus on sustainable development.
