LBJ Journal publishes print and online editions

Now in its 12th year of publication, the LBJ Journal of Public Affairs continued its tradition of showcasing outstanding student work in the spring 2000 issue, which will be published in May.

This year's Journal includes seven articles on a variety of policy topics and a commentary by a prominent LBJ School alumnus.

The articles include "For Adult Eyes Only: How Congress Sought to Protect Children from 'Indecency' Online," by Jonathan Considine and Carrie Paxton-Lamke; "The Clean Air Act and Grandfathered Power Plants: A Case Study of the Conners Creek Plant," by Sally Talberg; "Municipal Initiatives to Increase Popular Participation in Brazil," by Amy Sprague; "Lessons Unlearned: The Pitfalls of Attempting to Influence Policy through Strong Ideological Nominations to the Supreme Court," by Jason Bair; "Concentrated?: High-Tech Defense Industries in the Post-Cold War Era," by Jongwoo Kim; "Mandatory Hook-up Policies for Colonia Wastewater Projects: Overview of the Current Situation and Strategies for Improving Connection Rates," by Jeremiah Carew and Karen Poff; and "Beyond the Capitalist Welfare State," by Frank Fernandez.

This year's "Practitioner's Corner" is an address by Colorado Governor Bill Owens, a 1975 graduate of the LBJ School. In remarks entitled "A Year after Columbine: How Do We Heal a Wounded Culture?," Owens reflects on the Columbine tragedy and the rising concern over gun control and violence in schools.

In addition to the print-copy Journal, the Journal Online was published throughout the year, providing a range of articles, interactive discussion pieces, and a thematic bulletin board. Electronic versions of the spring 2000 Journal and previous print issues are also available online.

Managing editors of the 1999-2000 Journal and Journal Online are Erik Peterson, Eva Maria Stahl, and Anthony Wier. Associate editors are Cara Devetski, Joan Lim, Sharon Mastracci, Frederick Richardson, Suzannah Sennetti, Susan Vermeer, Wesley Wilson, and Laura Wolford.
