Urban League honors Ed Dorn
with community service award

The Austin Area Urban League (AAUL) presented LBJ School Dean Ed Dorn with its Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award for Community Service at its 25th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Banquet. The event took place on February 5 at the Hyatt Regency in Austin. Also as part of the evening’s festivities, actor and social activist Danny Glover was recognized as the AAUL’s Humanitarian of the Year, and $25,000 in college scholarships were awarded to Central Texas high school students.

According to AAUL spokeswoman Linda Connor, Dorn was selected for the award in recognition of “his leadership, his work in the area of equal opportunity, and his role in shaping the consciousness of future leaders.”

During the ceremony, a video was shown about Dorn’s achievements in the area of equal opportunity. The video featured commentary from Dorn’s colleagues, including U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, author Liz Carpenter, and Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis (LBJ Class of 1977).

“By honoring me with the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award, you are saying that you believe I can contribute to the work of enhancing opportunities and building trust,” said Dorn. “This prestigious award is not given to people who have finished the long march; it is given to those who have begun the march, but need some encouragement along the way. I hope that I can live up to the honor.”

The mission of the AAUL is to assist African-American and disadvantaged citizens in the achievement of social and economic equality through direct delivery service and advocacy.

In March, the Dorn tribute video captured two Telly awards in the categories of history/biography and social issues. The Telly is a national competition for broadcast and nonbroadcast videos.
