Three town hall meetings focusing on homeland security issues were organized at the LBJ School this spring by General Montgomery C. Meigs, the Distinguished Visiting Tom Slick Professor of World Peace (see related story). The first of the events, held on March 7, featured leading experts in the fields of national defense, technology, and finance who examined the unexpected vulnerabilities of homeland security. The program consisted of a panel presentation that was followed by a question-and-answer period. The panelists and their topics were Meigs, who spoke about the Subjectivity of Threat-Based Intelligence; UT Austin Vice President for Information Technology Daniel A. Updegrove, who discussed the Security of Our Systems; USAA Information Technology Company President Stephen E. Yates, who talked about the Impact on Banking and Insurance; and Gary Chapman, director of the LBJ Schools 21st Century Project, who focused on The Internet and National Security. In April, a second town hall meeting weighed the issue of civil liberties against the challeges of national security. The final town hall meeting, scheduled for mid-May, will focus on practitioners and will look at the role of such entities as universities and how these can function as information hubs and/or simulation centers. The Tom Slick Professorship of World Peace is endowed from the estate of the late Tom Slick of San Antonio and provides support for a continuing program of research, graduate education, and public enlightenment related to world peace. |
