Gwen Ifill, noted Washington correspondent for PBS, will give the main address at the LBJ Schools graduation convocation in May. Ifill is moderator and managing editor of the PBS program Washington Week and senior correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Before joining PBS, she spent five years at NBC News as chief congressional and political correspondent. Her reports appeared on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, Today, Meet the Press, and MSNBC, the all-news cable network. A veteran journalist, Ifill moved to NBC News from The New York Times, where she covered the White House and politics. She also covered national and local affairs for The Washington Post, Baltimore Evening Sun, and Boston Herald American. On the evening prior to the commencement ceremony, the student Commencement Committee will host a cocktail party for graduating students, their guests, and faculty and staff. The event, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the LBJ Library, will include live music and a speech by Texas Southern University Professor Thomas Freeman, who was Barbara Jordans debate coach and mentor. The graduation convocation is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. in Bates Recital Hall. |
