A Year of Reflection and Action

The events and issues captured in the headlines of the day have provided a provocative backdrop for the activities that took place at the LBJ School this past year.

As the war with Iraq became a reality, town hall meetings focused on economic impacts, military readiness, and homeland security.

As issues like Social Security and children’s health insurance climbed to the top of the national domestic agenda, a new Center for Health and Social Policy was launched to develop policy recommendations.

As the Texas Legislature prepared to face a projected multibillion-dollar shortfall, legislators were given some nuts-and-bolts information about the state budget and an overview of hot-button issues.

Meanwhile, LBJ School students organized brown bag seminars and soapbox sessions, produced a policy journal, led a community service drive for American troops in Iraq, and engaged in a range of other activities aimed at stimulating discussion and debate about issues ranging from abortion rights to environmental advocacy.

It was a period filled both with momentous changes and with opportunities for reflection and action. This issue of The Record looks at some of the programs and activities that made the year a memorable one.
