New ways of increasing minority access to higher education in the wake of the Hopwood v. Texas decision were discussed by a panel of Texas legislators and educators who met at the LBJ School in January. The public conference focused on the findings and recommendations of a report issued by the Texas Commission on a Representative Student Body. The commission, appointed by the Texas Higher Education Coalition, was headed by former Lieutenant Governor Bill Hobby (upper left). Among the many panelists who participated were LBJ School Visiting Professor Reginald Wilson (upper right), Senior Scholar Emeritus of the American Council on Education; Harvard Professor Gary Orfield (lower left), codirector of the Harvard Civil Rights Project; and UT San Antonio Associate Professor Blandina Cardenas (lower right), chair of the Educational Testing Service Board of Trustees.
