Description: This PRP will evaluate the implementation of Parenting and Paternity Awareness (p.a.p.a.), a high school curriculum designed to promote responsible parenthood and encourage the formation of strong, stable families.
The client is the Office of Family Initiatives in the Office of the Texas Attorney General who, as the child support enforcement agency for the State of Texas, has a stake in teaching young people about their obligations toward their children. This program also supports the goals of the new federal Healthy Marriage Initiative which aims to encourage marriage among unmarried parents, reduce divorce among married parents, and reduce out-of-wedlock childbearing through relationship skills counseling and education programs. Over 2000 teachers in Texas have been trained to use the p.a.p.a. curriculum.
The primary goals of this PRP are (1) to evaluate how effectively these trained teachers are implementing p.a.p.a. in their classroom instruction; (2) identify possible levers through which the Texas Education Agency (TEA) may build stronger support for this program, and (3) to provide recommendations to the Office of Family Initiatives as to how to build on the existing successes of the program.
