Description: This course is designed to address current issues in urban management, particularly those issues pertaining to the business of medium and large scale municipalities, and to develop and refine the students' professional and leadership skills in conjunction with the subject matter. Topics to be covered will include the following:
- Regionalism and conflicts - cities & suburbs
- Forms and structure of local governance
- Innovations, reinventing government, and reengineering
- Performance measurement
- Infrastructure and capital assets
- Financial functions, structure, and budgeting
- Elected official-professional staff relationships
- The media
- Fundamental service delivery issues: policing, fire protection, transportation
- Economic development and redevelopment
Resources to be used in the seminar will include assigned readings which will be on reserve in the LBJ School Library, guest speakers with professional expertise in the topical area being covered, and handout materials provided by the speakers.
