Description: This course will investigate governance functions and the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards of directors. Attention will be given to the role of the nonprofit board of directors in relation to the roles and responsibilities of the executive director of the nonprofit organization, its staff, financial supporters, consumers and other stakeholders. Topics will include stages of board development, board composition, policy making functions of the board, and the involvement of the board in fund development. Attention will be given to attracting board members, the training and orientation of members, as well as their retention and recognition. Special attention will be given to the role of the board in strategic planning activities and the relative responsibility of board members and staff in programmatic activities.
In addition to required readings, a midterm exam, and a final paper, students will be expected to attend at least two meetings of a functioning board and to interview active board members. This field experience will be the subject of a class presentation.
