Description: This section of Public Management stresses those topics I believe to be most important to understanding and working within a public setting. The course begins with a brief discussion of the nature of public administration as compared to the private sector and examines public affairs as a career or profession. We then move to a discussion of formal organization and bureaucracy, with attention to characteristics of large bureaucratic organizations, the role of the informal organization, and how and why the current organizational landscape may be changing. We also examine the role of the individual in the organization and the various ways in which people adapt (or maladapt) to organizational life. Psychological and personality factors which shape the role of the individual in the organization are given considerable attention.
