We live in an online world and people are increasingly expecting online transparency concerning their tax dollars. Continuing the work of a policy research project (PRP) begun in 2008 at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, Professors Sherri Greenberg and Gary Chapman are leading two teams of students in an exploration of the expansion of government financial transparency in Texas using online tools.
This research project will involve students working in collaboration with Texas state agency leaders, members of the state legislature, local government officials and the media. The purpose of this PRP is to help the State of Texas and Texas local governments put more of their financial information online and to develop a user community of this new transparency effort.
This year-long project will culminate in a student-led conference featuring local and state government officials, policy analysts and members of the media offering their insight into online transparency. Additionally, students will be given the opportunity to present their research and offer recommendations on ways in which Texas can improve online financial transparency.
