Lobbying for Non-Profits

Lobbying can be an effective strategy for nonprofits, as well as corporate entities. We will address lobbying by nonprofits at the various levels of government in the United States. This seminar course will investigate who lobbies and how. Students will learn the elements of successful lobbying plans and apply them. Each student will develop a lobbying plan for a nonprofit organization of his or her choice. Topics include the following: lobbying versus advocacy; legal and tax issues; lobbying techniques, lobbying strategies, various levels of government; size of nonprofit; and mission of nonprofit. We will use case studies, publications, academic literature, professional materials and other sources as needed.
