Norman Birnbaum
Europe and Asia: Eight Decades of Hope

Norman Birnbaum was born in New York in 1926 and educated at its public schools, Williams College and Harvard (PhD, sociology.) He has taught at the LSE, Oxford, Strasbourg, Amherst College and is University Professor Emeritus, Georgetown University Law Center. He has  worked with  Senator Edward Kennedy,  and Jesse Jackson,  and  the European socialist and green parties.He was on the founding Editorial Board of New Left Review and on the Board of Partisan Review.  He is on the Editorial Board of The Nation and a columnist for El Pais and Handelsblatt. . He  won a law suit against the CIA for opening his correspondence and  was barred from the late unlamented German Democratic Republic  in its last years. His  recent book is: After Progress, American Social Reform and European Socialism In The Twentieth Century.
