Understanding the Changing Role of Hispanic Americans
As the number of Hispanic Americans in the United States grows, so too does its potential for the group to have commensurate growth in political power. The Center examines this trend and its implications from both academic and practical perspectives.
Hispanic Leadership Initiative
The Center, in partnership with the
Texas Exes, proposes a Hispanic Leadership Initiative to examine the Hispanic population’s growing potential for leadership across
Texas and in the nation. The initiative will measure emerging political and policy trends in the Hispanic community, recognize Hispanic
leadership, develop and host information relevant to the Hispanic community and increase recruitment of Hispanic students to the University
and the LBJ School.
The Hispanic Leadership Initiative has five main objectives to be achieved over a three-year period.
- Highlight Hispanic leadership and the emerging role of Hispanic Americans in influencing public policy
- Recognize outstanding achievements in leadership by Hispanic alumni
- Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for Hispanic alumni and students
- Introduce Hispanic undergraduate students to the LBJ School of Public Affairs
- Reconnect Hispanic alumni with the University of Texas on an annual basis

CPG Partners with Las Comadres for Texas Public Policy and Campaign Training
The Center for Politics and Governance partnered with Las Comadres Para Las Americas to present the 2008-09 Texas Public Policy &
Candidate Program (TP-ACT).
The TPP-ACT is a part of the Las Comadres Para Las Americas Legacy Programs Institute. The state-level program is
designed to encourage Latina leaders in the business, nonprofit, and government communities to participate in the
political process by being informed on issues, candidates, and voting. The program consists of rigorous and diverse
sessions led by some of the state’s foremost leaders in Texas and national politics and government. Successful
participants in the TPP-ACT complete the program with skills needed to consider serving the public by seeking elected
or appointed office.
TPP-ACT participants convene at the LBJ School from across the state to learn from
distinguished presenters such as former Texas representative Dr. Lauro Cruz; Las Comadres President and CEO Dr.
Nora Comstock; CPG Director Veronica Vargas Stidvent; UT Austin professor of government Dr. Jason Casellas and many more.
