Hispanic Leadership Initiative Launch
May 2009
 
hli_logo-200x600.jpg On May 4, 2009, the Center, in partnership with the Texas Exes, launched a Hispanic Leadership Initiative to examine and promote the Hispanic population's growing potential for leadership across Texas and the nation.  The launch event featured remarks from the University of Texas System Chancellor, Francisco Cigarroa, followed by a panel discussion.
 
Panelists included Henry Bonilla, former U.S. Congressman; Ted Cruz, former Texas Solicitor General; Pete Gallego, Texas State Representative; and Orlinda Naranjo, Travis County District Court Judge.

CPG to Partner with Texas Tribune; Evan Smith Named
Center Fellow and Invited to Teach

The Center for Politics and Governance has announced a strategic partnership with The Texas Tribune, a new non-profit, nonpartisan public media organization headquartered in Austin, Texas.  CPG and the Tribune will collaborate on a number of projects, including a lecture series, events and student internships.
 
Evan Smith, CEO and Editor in Chief of the Tribune, has been named a Center Fellow and has been invited by the LBJ School to teach beginning in the Spring, 2010.  Plans call for Smith to teach a course on the evolution and impact of new media. Smith will also host the Center’s Perspectives series.
 
“I have immense respect for the LBJ School and this partnership perfectly aligns with what we are trying to do at the Tribune, “ says Smith. “Our mission is to promote civic engagement and informed discourse, so aligning with this fine institution is exactly on point."

CPG Welcomes Benjamin Sasse

sasse.jpgBenjamin Sasse, Professor of Public Affairs at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, has joined the Center for Politics and Governance as a Center for Politics and Governance Fellow.  Sasse, who recently served as Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation at the Department of Health and Human Services, will teach a number of courses for the Center and help develop a new curriculum that supports the four initiatives of the Center, that include effective governance, new media in politics, state politics and policy and, policy and public affairs communication.
