Barbara Jordan Scholars Program

Description of the Endowment

Part of Barbara Jordan's enduring legacy at the LBJ School is an endowed fund in her name that provides a two-year $25,000 scholarship to an oustanding entering student each fall. Established in 1988 by the Perot Foundation of Dallas, the Barbara Jordan Scholarship is given to students who have shown potential for leadership and a strong commitment to public service.

In a statement issued during the announcement ceremony in 1988, Ross Perot said, "this program is to honor Barbara Jordan for her service to Texas and our nation. She is truly unique--a rare combination of a true leader and an excellent teacher. We look forward to the development of future leaders for Texas and the nation taught by Barbara Jordan, who is the epitome of the best in both fields--public service and education."

On that occasion Professor Jordan said, "The way we guarantee that the future will be an improvement on the present is to see to it that young people who want to pursue careers in public service will have the opportunity to devote their time and talents to that pursuit. These funds will free students to devote their time to being the best they can be."

Purpose of the Fellowship

To support outstanding LBJ School of Public Affairs students through two academic years and a required summer internship.
