LBJ School Associate Professor Alan Kuperman to Present Research in Washington, D.C. on Global Phase-Out of Highly-Enriched Uranium

LBJ School Associate Professor Alan Kuperman will join University of Texas at Austin researchers to present the results of a year-long investigation on prospects for a global phase-out of commerce in bomb-grade, highly enriched uranium (HEU) for non-weapons purposes (www.heuphaseout.org/).

To date, international efforts to reduce HEU commerce have focused on fuel and targets for research reactors and production of medical isotopes. That work is crucial but leaves out the majority of non-weapons HEU use - for naval propulsion, ice-breaking ship reactors, floating reactors, critical assemblies, and pulsed reactors. Phasing out remaining HEU use in non-weapons activities could reduce the risks of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism, and facilitate verification of a prospective Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT).

The project's 14 researchers - graduate students in nuclear engineering and public affairs - conducted field interviews around the world, including Russian and China, under the supervision of Prof. Alan J. Kuperman. The initiative is organized by the Nuclear Proliferation Prevention Project at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and is supported by the Nuclear Threat Initiative and the University of Texas at Austin.
