Fellowships and Financial Aid
The LBJ School is committed to making a quality education affordable. In addition to having one of the most affordable tuition and fee structures among comparable public policy schools in the country, the LBJ School awards more than $1 million each year in fellowships to its entering class. Moreover, the University of Texas at Austin offers a variety of need-based financial aid packages.
Within each entering class, the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs seeks to achieve a critical mass of traditionally underrepresented populations, including those of different cultural, ethnic, gender, and geographic backgrounds. The School believes that a meaningful representation of a broad range of diverse interests and experiences is essential to a public affairs education both inside and outside the classroom. The School annually awards fellowships on the basis of merit and the desire for a broadly diverse student body among those applying to the master's or doctoral programs. Consistent with the criteria set out in the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School's admission policy, selection for these fellowships are based on a complete and thorough review of the student's file. Fellowships are awarded based on merit and take into consideration:
- a strong record of academic performance,
- demonstrated professional experience in a field of public affairs or policy,
- an ability to contribute to, or benefit from, the diverse and challenging educational environment of the School.
All LBJ School applicants are automatically reviewed on a competitive basis for merit-based fellowships during the admissions review process. No additional application is required. Those receiving competitive fellowships will be notified of their award in their official LBJ School admissions letter. Fellowship recipients and non-fellowship recipients are strongly encouraged to explore their eligibility for need-based financial assistance.

Redistribution of Out of State Tuition Waivers
Each year, The LBJ School distributes a set number of out-of-state tuition waivers to members of the incoming class based on the Admission Committee's assessment of past academic success and future academic promise. These waivers allow non-Texas residents to pay in-state tuition rates.
In the event a non-resident student who was awarded a waiver no longer needs it because he/she has established residency, or because his/her out of state tuition is covered by employment within the University, the School is able to reissue that waiver to another currently enrolled LBJ School student. All currently enrolled non-resident students whose out-of-state tuition is not covered by other sources will automatically be considered for these redistributed waivers. Students who are awarded redistributed waivers are typically notified of their award 2-3 weeks after the beginning of classes for the semester.
Because there are more non-resident students than there are reissued waivers—and because it is impossible to predict how many waivers will be available for redistribution in a given semester—the School has established a selection process that is guided by a number of factors:
1) Whether students have an acceptable GPA in the LBJ School;
2) The number of semesters completed/whether the student is in the last year of study;
3) Whether the student is receiving fellowship funding from other sources;
4) Whether the student has previously received a redistributed waiver.

The LBJ School Fulbright Alumni Fellowship for Master for Global Policy Students
The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, at the University of Texas at Austin, has created a fellowship specifically for Fulbright alumni who apply and are admitted to the School's newest degree program, the Master of Global Policy Studies (MGPS). Beginning with the entering class of fall 2009, qualified applicants will be eligible for the LBJ School Fulbright Alumni Fellowship, which covers tuition and fees for all four semesters of the master's degree program. The LBJ School Fulbright Alumni Fellowship was created in recognition of the unique international perspectives that former participants in the Fulbright exchange program can offer to the student body and the value that these perspectives bring to the entire university community.
